    cold-weather wear

What clothing do you use for winter antenna-climbing? I'm not really happy with the windbreakers I've tried. In order to get enough room in the arms for climbing, you get a lot of baginess elsewhere, and I am leery about having a lot of material flapping around at deployment time. I was thinking about trying a wet-suit for a wind-impermeable layer. Has anyone tried this, and did they like it?

Try looking at X-country ski clothes. They are made to be warm, wick sweat away from your body, and seem to be tight fitting while allowing a lot of movement.

    Good luck

Try Windstopper fleece. W.L. Gore makes the brand name "Gore Windstopper" stuff, but you can get cheaper versions made by REI, Campmor, or whoever the big outdoors retailer in your neck of the woods is. Most of the stuff is warm enough if you stay moving, blocks the wind, and isn't too baggy at pull time. I know some guys in Coldorado who swear by it.

I've made some jumps in a wet suit, and they work great for keeping you warm and staying out of the way, but I think you'd probably overheat on the way to the top of a tower.

I use windstopper fleece. I have also gotten some good deals on wicking layers. Maybe $20.00 per piece. THey help heaps, as you are more worried about the sweat making you colder.

Also, a trick I learned in the construction trade, try surgical gloves under any thin glove you wear to climb. It keeps your hands really warm. Although you will sweat in the gloves and need to dry them off before jumping.

    RE: cold-weather wear

So I went to Galyan's to look for some windstopper fleece, but there selection was pretty sparse, it being spring and all. I do think it would have worked pretty nicely if they'd had anything in my size. However, you pay for what you get, >$200 for a jacket and ~$125 for a vest. If you are going over barbed wire with it, you may want to go another way.
I ended up getting a Mountain Hardware zip-up jacket made of a high-density fleece named "Wind Pro", advertised to stop 95% of wind (whatever that means).
I used it Sunday morning, which was 31 degrees, with a steady 7-10 mph ground wind, cooking along pretty good at 500'. It was just about perfect for those conditions. I was wearing heavyweight polypropylene long underwear, jeans, a sweatshirt, and the fleece jacket. Fairly light, low-bulk setup.
I neither sweat nor got cold during the climb. I only got chilled when I was sitting down taking extended breaks (motivation to get my ass up).
The jacket has a drawcord waist, so that won't flap around. It has elastic wrist cuffs, so nothing will slide down over your pull hand in freefall. The cut is trim in the armpits so you have full range of motion with your arms unencumbered.

Therefore, based on my experience on Sunday, I can recommend the Mountain Hardware wind-pro fleece jacket for antenna-climbing down to 30 degrees.

Oh, BTW the jump was nice. Since it was my first since November, the fear was coursing through me like a river. I had sewing-machine leg at the exit point. Felt good.
