Opening a Site: Opening a new BASE jumping site involves a level of skill and responsibility a little higher than jumping an existing site for the first time. With an existing site, you normally have the option of gaining information from persons who have previously attempted the site. People can tell you what has actually happened and what you should do! Whereas on a new site, you have to calculate all possibilities based on measurements, observations, and prior experience.
There are a number of considerations including:
- BASE ethics.
- technical considerations.
- safety.
- your own experience and ability to assess the suitability of the site.
- your own experience and ability to be the first to jump that site.
BASE Ethics are treated in other articles. It is important to consider other jumpers, the community, the environment, property, and most importantly - yourself.
Technical considerations can be broken down into access, exit, free fall, deployment, canopy flight, landing, equipment, etc.
Safety is about getting all the technical factors correct, using appropriate PPE, and having right mindset/philosophy/mental attitude about the jump. It is also about saying NO when required.
Your prior experience and knowledge are very important factors. Do not underestimate how much you really do not know. Do not be afraid to ask other people for assistance. Do not be afraid to say NO. Although it is exciting to be a pioneer. It is counterproductive if your first pioneering effort is your last jump.
