    Floating pin - pro's & con's

    YO!
I was jumping some times ago with a guy who was using a BR Vertex with a bridle that catched my attention.
In fact, this bridle had all the 2 pins sewn, in a different manner than my bridle. I own a Vertex2 with the lower pin not sewn on the bridle.
I asked the guy why he was jumping that setup, but he told me he was using it because he heard rumors about some trouble with the floating pin.
I've jumped my rig in different ways, from 0,5 sec. delay to terminal and I never noticed any pin hesitations.
Anyone can explain me better if are there any troubles with floating pins?
    Thx in advance!

I am not sure I know what a floating pin is. Could someone please post a pic or diagram? I have read this post and others and I am somewhat confused. For all I know I have seen this set up and just didn't know it was called a floating pin.

See the attached retarded painting i made.

One of the pins is free to move along the bridle. If the pin is stuck, then it become a pulley for the bridle and transfers the force to the other pin. As long as one pin is pulled out, the pressure is release and the tight/stuck pin should come out.

just as if you had floating pins...

but that dont explain why some talks about hesitations on floating pin rigs...

    Re: Floating pin - pro's & con's

I would be interested too on more views on Floating v non floating......

    Is there any benefit?
are there any findings on the situations where the floating is better?

I have only once pull tested the floating pin (VERY limited - when I had a look at Fabers rig as he is the only person I have met and seen with a floating pin) and can see how it seems to work, but saying that, with my limited testing on my non floating pin (different angles and pull forces) I cant see that there is any benefit between either of them. Obviously my testing is extremely limited, hell I only spent 5 mins looking at Fabers rig as he was on a mission that afternoon and did 6 (i think it was).

Any thoughts please would be appreciated.

    Re: Floating pin - pro's & con's

The most variable pin tension I've measured on a BASE rig is _always_ the bottom pin of two pin rigs. The problem appears to be that the harness geometry points the force from the tightening leg straps directly back at the lower pin.

The floating pin may (I'm not the designer, obviously) address this issue. By allowing the top pin to pull first if the bottom pin is too tight, it pulls the _least_ variable of the three pin positions (top, bottom, or center--in a Prism) first, which loosens up the bottom (most variable) pin in the event it has tightened too much.

In my opinion, the theory is sound, but I'd love to see some opening sequence videos to see if it works out in practice.
