Anyone planning to make their first jump at Kjerag Norway will be happy to hear of our new exit training device to reduce the possibility of a head down exit.
A clever young Norwegian lad named Ronny (a nice young bloke you would think is sponsored by McDonalds due to his choice of BASE equipment colors and his red hair ) has devised a "Pendulator" (what he calls the device) that simulates the first second of freefall - the most critical part of the exit procedure for beginner BASE jumpers. Due to his ingenuity, we are experiencing a high rate of perfect exits - in fact 12 out of 12 perfect 45 degree angle exits have been recorded. The Pendulator platform is situated 10 meters up a tree with two ropes that are connected to another tree about 30 meters away. The jumper leaves the platform and falls for one second before the ropes stop the jumpers downward descent, swinging them to safety before impact.
Beginner BASE jumpers making their first Pendulator jump usually go flat or maybe even a bit head down. Less than five minutes later the jumper is back up the tree making their next attempt at acheiving a 45 degree angle exit. By the fourth or fifth time - 20 minutes later - they have developed the skills to make a perfect exit from Kjerag - a 13 second to impact cliff.
This course has become much improved due to the volunteer efforts of the Norwegians who want to essentially preserve the lives of all BASE jumpers - first timers as well as experienced - and to keep their cliffs open for jumping to everyone. Sure there is a small fee for the course, but in comparison, this course is MUCH less than any other formal course out there - and you get to jump from a very big wall!
Currently there are five rigs available for hire, packing is available, and packing lessons are also available, all for a small reasonable fee. If you are thinking of making your first jump, come on over to Norway. But you have to hurry up because the season will be ending by soon - by mid Septmeber unless there are enough jumpers to keep it open longer...
