Picket your own local "National Park"

The fight against discrimination is against the NPS, not a specific territory.

That means, if you can't come to our park to protest, go to your own!

Q. What if the NP near my home does not have anything to jump off?

A. THAT IS NOT THE POINT!

The picket/protest is not against the ranger at that park, it is against the system!

When you call your local news and tell them you are doing your part to help the Cliff-jumpers in Yosemite by staging your own picket line, it will add to our support!!!

STOP THE DISCRIMINATION!

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! I AM SHOWING MINE!

When the chief ranger at Joshua Tree proposed a ban on bolting the climbing community got off its collective butt and acted. This would have been a precident setting policy that the entire country might have been affected by as other parks adopted variation of it. We showed huge numbers of people who would not accept the proposals and we came up with an entire spectrum of alternatives. We had several meetings with Mr Quintana who was gracious and receptive to our points. The outcome at the end of the day is a compromise which allows for further developement in some developed areas, bolting by permit in others and a ban in wilderness areas designated as untouchable. We got far more than the Mtn bikers, hikers or the equestrians. HOW? The Access Fund, Friends of Joshua Tree and believe it or not The Sierra Club joined forces and cooperated to bash the ban. We showed up in numbers, wrote, visited, commented...etc.
NOW...the base community is behind the power curve as the precident is already set and the horse is out of the barn. Extra hard work to reascert our position is needed but as evidenced by the Joshua Tree decision making process we can work it out and get what we want in some form or another. If we are strong enough and show the right numbers we CAN influence the system.

JonE, is right, we CAN influence the system but a bunch of you on the west coast missed a prime opportunity to represent YOUR sport at the rally/march at Yosemite. Thankfully, the media DID show up and were given information from Tom S. and others to make them think there IS something to our cause. To me, the highlight was when Joe, Mick, Avery and other jumpers, went through our gear from top to bottom in front of the chief Ranger and some of the media, right at the base of El Cap.

As Dennis said, " I'm in a cage, what's your excuse?"
