Everyone,
We cannot afford to let lame editorials like this sit in front of the public's eye unanswered. I encourage everyone to take the time to write a letter to the Deseret News. Even though I have never met him, I'm sure that Robin is busy slinging ink in response to this ludicrous editorial.
This is not to say that we do not have issues to work through in Moab, Twin Falls, and other legal BASE jumping areas, but we can't sit around and let these people squash what little freedom we do have.
I have thought long and hard about what we can actually do to improve our image to the general public, especially in areas like Moab and Twin Falls where we are in the limelight.
Here is one idea:
A national (or world-wide if anyone else is interested) fundraising effort for search and rescue units.
This could be a targeted effort directed towards the communities of Moab, Twin Falls, and possibly Arizona.
A specific day could be established, and you and your clan of jumpers could get together on that day and conduct a fundraiser as you see fit. (T-shirt sales, video night, car washes, anything)
Each region of jumpers would then send that money into one central point where it could be distributed to the various search and rescue agencies in *front* of the media and the public eye.
Not only is it a fair thing to do, but do you realize the *positive* image that we could portray to the public if this was marketed right?
I'm almost certain that if people chipped in on this one, it would be very easy to raise $1,000+ for both Grand County and Twin Falls.
In the grand scheme of things, a thousand bucks is not alot of money, but it's all about public acceptance, and that is what matters if you want to make legal jumps.
What are your thoughts on this? I'm willing to spearhead the effort and make it happen. The only drawback on my part is the fact that I'm getting ready to move to Colorado in 2 days.
However, I can begin work on this by the 2nd week in June, which would produce a National fundraising date sometime in early August.
What do you think?
C-ya,
Bryan
