    Advice on First gear

I've finally obtained (legally) some cash for my first base rig. As with my first skydiving gear, I'm sorta in the dark as to what I'm looking for. It looks like I'll be hitting mostly A's and maybe a bridge or two. I've only one jump and I can see I'm hooked. I am 5'9" and a fine 200 lbs. I'm thinking along the lines of a 280-310 canopy, but honestly, that's all I know. I'm unfamiliar with the quality and reputation of base containers, and toggle set-ups. My base mentors live 4 hours away and the local support here almost doesn't exist. I'm looking to spend around $1000-$1100. Would anyone help me choose a good beginner rig or help prode me in the right direction? Big thanks in advance!

There are a lot of containers out there. I would personally go with a velcro close for a first container but that's a personal choice. I can say that I weigh 205 lbs and my FOX 285 V-Tec treats me nice. I love it! :7 I just ordered another one. But in all honesty I watch people land other BASE canopies just fine also.

check this out...http://www.blincmagazine.com/content...3d?cat=9&lang= that should give ya a start...as far as which is best?...i think it all comes down to personal opinion after making the "pin or velcro" choice...to which i may add: i think velcro would probably be your best choice at this point in your BASE career...

You weigh about the same as me and I'm going to the Fox 285, the 240 and 260 canopies are getting too small for my big fat ass.
In your price range you should be able to find a decent used BASE rig. A velcro closed one is probably better for you just because you see alot more of them on the used market. I'm in the process of buying a brand new custom rig with all of the options and it's going to end out costing me about $2300. total.
