A Cape Town man was seriously injured after his parachute failed to open when he jumped off T**** M******* in a base jump stunt on Friday.

Karl Heyden, 44, crashed onto Africa ledge below the upper cableway station and broke an arm, both his legs and his pelvis. Rescuers took him to the Milnerton Medi-Clinic, where his condition was described as stable.

He was due for surgery for the multiple-trauma injuries he sustained.

Anwaz Bent, of Wilderness Search and Rescue, said Heyden, an experienced base jumper, had tried to parachute with another man. His companion landed safely.

Bent said rescue teams battled for hours to save his life. They used the cablecar to abseil down and put him on a stretcher so he could be airlifted to hospital by helicopter.

I wish the wilderness search and rescue co-ordination was as quick to get into action as they were to speak to the media....

yes, it was that too

his parachute did open, he had a very bad offheading and two object strikes before 'landing' on a ledge

his injuries are thankfully less extensive and less serious than reported and he should be released from hospital today

I hope he will feel like posting about this at some point, but if he does not, please respect that.
