About Multi and config at terminal?

    Help (two questions),

Currently I'm trying out the canopy with the Multi removed. Now days I only have the bridle directly attached to the ring at the top center cell attachment point. I have only done approx. 10 jumps so far with this configuration so I will try it out some 40 jumps more before a comment about it.

    Now to the questions.

Is the center cell attachment point in the Multi in the same place that the single attachment point on a "standard" canopy?

Is the top center cell attachment point as reinforced on the Multi canopy as on a standard single attachment point canopy?

I really like to know because it is starting to be bigwall season here and I will soon take that canopy to terminal and I'd like to know if the top center cell attachment point is going to manage the snatch force of my 36" PC.

    Thanks

There are some good and knowledgeable people
who post here. However, with questions of this
type I recommend you factor in answers from people at Basic Research. They have both telephone and email and are quite glad to answer questions about their equipment.

i just got a Gargoyle and was wondering if anyone here jumps that or any BR container with the multi and where do they put the excess bridle. I always have a bit of multi line and bridle left over so I S-fold it and lay it over the top of the canopy for closing. What do you all do?

RE: About Multi and config at termi

On my Reactor 4 there are a couple of loops inside the container, on the back pad, just under the top flap. The multi is stowed in the space between the canopy and the top of the container. On some jumps I've just free-stowed the multi across the top of the canopy, as you describe. That worked fine, too.

On BR's containers, there are 2 loops inside the container, on the back pad, just under the top flap, along the top trim tape of warning label, about 10 cm - 4" apart. You should put 2 small rubber band (exactly the ones you would use to close tail gate) on each loop, totalling 4 small rubber bands.
Once you have finished packing the canopy into container and closed multi sheath, you have to S fold the sheathed multi into the 4 small rubber bands.
Just after I bought my Prism, on the phone Nick from BR told me that the reason of this rubber banding the sheathed multi is to avoid that multi could wander around the container from packing time to jumping time (when you hike, when you don the rig, etc).
So, the rubber bands are there not exactly to stage deployment of multi but only to keep it there, in position. For this reason, they have to be quite loose.

    Gargoyle/Multi

I have seen a Gargoyle with multi stows. I bet Morpheus would put them in if you asked.

Otherwise, what you're doing ('s' folds over the top of the canopy) appears to be the consensus for dealing with the situation.

    RE: Gargoyle/Multi

I do have the stows in the container, but there is always excess bridle so i usual route the little bit of multi up to the top of the canopy and out the top flap.

    RE: Gargoyle/Multi

Tell me if I understand correctly. I think the excess bridle is normal. Usually after doing two stows on each side of the container, I take the excess bridle and tuck it under the right side flap, so it when I tuck in the top flap it winds up gong from the stows at the top of the container, around the bottom of the top flap, then under the right side flap to the top of the shrivel flap. As I write this, I'm sure it's clear as mud. But does this sound like the "excess" you're referring to?

    Interloper,

Actually I did just cut n paste my mail to BR, was directed to BR and I have even re-send the mail but have not received any answer.

The same with the first technical question I posted on this board and that Tom Aiello was helping me with input on. That was a question that I e-mailed to BR in 2002-04-30 for the first time and after that I re send it two times before I ran out of time ...

I do not know why they do not answer my questions, I'm only hoping that they are to busy developing, basejumping and traveling so that have not have the time yet :)

I do realize that sometimes they do not have the time to answer questions. But I like to get input and I like to discuss technical aspects of basejumping and baserigging to try to stay alive as long as possible in this game ;)

I'm just back from Norway and some cool bigwall jumping and it seems like the attachment point are holding up :) so then you know

RE: About Multi and config at termi

The top center cell attachment point is exactly the same on a FOX with or without a multi.

The following combinations of the multi have been jumped many times without any problems:

    -All four multi lines attached.
-Only the top center cell attachment.
-The top center cell and bottom center cell attachment (this configuration keeps the tailpocket level with the pack job as the canopy is lifted through to line stretch but doesn't do anything to help center cell stripping).
I haven't heard of anyone jumping with only the attachment points on cells 3 and 5 (this would be interesting to see).

If a canopy is frequently giving bad offheadings for no apparent reason (eg. p/c, body position, bad packing are discounted) the cause (in my experiences) is usually the combination of the container, the canopy and the packing technique to place the canopy in the container, not just the canopy alone.

The first step is to pack the canopy in another type of container and jump it bunch of times. Usually this will solve the problem. It's also a good idea to pack a canopy that you've had good results with into the questionable container and jump that set-up.

Most offheadings (which aren't directly attributed to something obvious) occur when the canopy is lifted out of the pack tray. The canopy drags on the pack tray unevenly and it spins as it is lifted to line stretch.

Uneven dragging is due to one or more of the following:
    1. Body position (eg. if you are tilted to side)
    2. The p/c is pulling to one side (eg. crosswind or oscillating p/c). Vented p/c's will reduce oscillation.
    3. Packing technique when placing the canopy in the container. You should test your packing technique by pulling the packed canopy out of the container by the bridle. If it turns at all when it lifts out then that isn't a good sign. Usually it's the bottom corners of the container that turn it. However sometimes the canopy near the top of the container can be compressed unevenly.

    One example:
For some reason I can't get ANY canopy to open with an acceptable on-heading rate with a Prism, whereas for many other experienced jumpers this container gives them their best results by far.
On the flip side I get excellent on heading rates with a Perigee Pro but many others have had really horrible heading experiences with this container.
Personal packing styles are usually the cause, not the canopies used in the container (given that the canopy was correctly manufactured).

RE: About Multi and config at termi

    Thanks Dwain for the input.

I will try to place the canopy a little different in the container for a while and see if that will make any difference Now days I have the canopy in a Prism but maybe I will try to put it in to another container and see what happens if not the changes in the placing of the canopy in the container helps.

    Thanks again!

RE: About Multi and config at termi

From detailed analysis of video, we can see on alot of Team Bautasten's jumps that the multi seems to work poorly in crosswind conditions. Even with what seems like totally reasonable body position and acceptable pilotchute movement, the mutli is causing asymmetrical loading on the canopy resulting in very bizarre 180's. I have seen alot of jumps in many years and would liken the effect to Spacey's Missisippi boatmans whip effect. Sort of the multi pulls on the left side of the canopy volume being extracted, creating a nice twisting mass of parachute.

From what I have seen the multi has its place in low freefall stuff in nil winds. And as long as a correct pilotchute size is used, has anybody actually determined whether centercell strip is really a big problem or just ugly to look at ?

    Basic Research whereabouts

I had the same problems with BR recently.

I called them (they prefer about 9am to 4pm mOn to Thur and 9am to midday Fri - California time.

They are having problems with their ISP / server. Apparently they are going to change soon.

So, in the meantime, I would suggest calling them.
