Congratulations to everyone who went to Petronas and managed to stay alive and leave only a little blood on the building. In so doing, you surmounted the dishonesty, bad faith and poor planning of the organizers to provide Malaysia and the world with a overall favorable glimpse of extreme skydiving.
You did this despite the fact that the first-class event envisioned and designed by me and others was sabotaged by Jasmina and Dann Lee, Mark Hewitt, Johnny Weasel, Dwain Weston and Anne Helliwell, thus stacking the deck heavily against a good outcome.
But you pulled it off anyway, which pleasantly surprised those of us who knew how bad this could have been -- and for that I congratulate and thank all of you, including Mr. Becker, who at least lived through his part of the adventure.
Congratulations also to Mr. Hewitt, who ended up doing exactly what I assigned him to do in the first place: Make sure everybody lived.
True, he accomplished this after betraying everyone on the original world championship team -- whose allegiance he demanded before jumping ship for a free surfing trip -- but the fact remains: Even though he made a huge mess and totally undercut the professional standard several of us were trying to establish, he was able to keep his totally half-assed event from turning into a big disaster.
Beer demo the Petronas "competition" absolutely was, but it was a good beer demo and if you weren't one of the weasels who plotted and scammed to undercut the people who set it up and tried to do it right, then you should absolutely be proud of what you accomplished, for yourselves, and for the advancement of this sport we all love.
