    ignorance v. education

Kahunas are big shots: i.e., IBM is the big kahuna of computer companies.

Cojones are something you apparently lack since you are too much of a coward to write your name when you snipe at others.

And coherence is something else you lack; otherwise you'd know that with the exponential increase in BASE jumps and jumpers during the last couple of years, there has _not_ been a corresponding increase in either fatalities or serious injuries.

    RE: ignorance v. education

    Robin,

For one, I am not the Web Weasel you proclaim me to be. My name is Fred Earhart which I post as Fred_E. For another, I made a mistake,I meant to say Cajones and not Kahunas. Anyway, the definition of Kahuna is not "big shot," that is slang, the real definition is "native medicine man or priest."

Also, we must not forget to add that many of the entering BASE jumpers are using BR's tailgate, jumping more advanced equipment, and being trained by professionals, thus highly reducing the number of injuries or fatalities that would have occured under the "old way" of BASE jumping.

My "snipe" of a remark was to underscore the point that if you are ignorant in BASE you will eventually, unless you get scared into a more conservative mentality before it happens, become injuried or killed. And, if a person wants to make low freefalls or perform ariels, they should educate themselves and train to better their chances of success before undertaking such a feat.

My dear friend Robin, think before you snap!

Fun and Safe jumps to all!

    Fred_E

    Oops, sorry about that.

Talk about reading comprehension... it was late and I read your subject heading as your name.... duhhhh.

So yes, obviously I retract my weasel comment, as you clearly aren't one since you state your name.

And thanks for pointing that out so politely -- and for the kahuna lesson...I didn't know the original meaning.

Peace, also... I didn't see anything in your restatement with which I substantively disagree.

    c-ya at the edge sometime.

    Love,

    Robin

    RE: Dork breedin'

In the last year or so...
BASE jumpers have left the earth, or met the earth, however you want to say it. Here is my own count of fatalities and major injuries. I'll leave it up to you for a judgement of whether limited knowledge, ignorance, incompetance, stupidy, brainlocking, bad luck or whatever you want to say, contributed to their death.

    FATALITIES

1.) Some Russian guy - died of heart failure in Norway - or so they specualte.

2.) Thor Alex - died in Norway - after jumping into fog/cloud bank never to be seen alive again.

3.) Frank Gambalie - died in Yosemite - after being chased by the NPS into the fast moving Merced river.

4.) Jan Davis - died in Yosemite - after jumping borrwed gear.

5.) Daniel - died in Norway on Troll Wall - weak launch resulted as impact with ledge.

6.) Josh McVey - died in Oregon at Crown Point -speculation says he attempted reverse gainier, had a malfunction, was then impailed by tree.

7.) Hansen Bridge fatality - forgot his name -died after canopy swept him into fast a moving river.

    MAJOR INJURIES

1.) Wayne Crill - jumped at high altitude - sustained many injuries.

2.) Jeb Corliss - jumped at waterfall where a 90 degree left was not an option - got a 90 left - sustained many injuries.

3.) Guy at Bridge day - broke both femurs - doesn't really count because he was only a SPAN jumper.

4.) Nathan - got extremely lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.) Mike Muscat - no reported injures this year!

This is all I can think of. I'm sure there has been more, especially injuries that were not so major. Maybe someone else out there who knows of more that can added to this list.

Well, take a look at these stats and tell me there has not been an increase in the number of incidents whether they be fatalities or major injuries. We do have to factor in the safer gear and the professional training when we equate the jump numbers and the incidents.

There is a way to approach the boundaries of BASE
today, and even stretch them past their currnet limits, while maintaining an acceptable level of safety. There are two guys, Aussies they may be, who pracitce BASE from a very analytical and technical point of view. There is nobody in BASE who has the skill these two guys do. They dive train regularly and approach each BASE jump with knowledge that will translate into a sensible outcome (well, for one of them anyway).

Remember, always check and doulbe check your gear!!! Think before you jump...

    You miss my point, JJ

I said there was an exponential increase in the number of jumpers and jumps being made without a _proportional_ increase in injuries and fatalities.

Obviously, there are more absolute numbers of both, but on balance we're not doing so bad as some predicted and others try to make it seem.

Just as obviously, we need to keep guarding against complacency because when lots of people make lots of jumps without problems, it's easy to start thinking BASE jumping really is just another skydive.

Which it obviously isn't... and which brings us full circle to dear old McDork, who seems so offended by people telling jump stories on this Board, but who is just as obviously clueless about the way in which those jump stories can also add to everyone's collective knowledge base, resulting in more fun and less blood.

    I hear ya Robin...

With all the jumps that are made nowadays, you're probably absolutley right. In fact there is proably less fatalities and major injuries when one figures it exponentially. I wonder just how many jumps are made each year these days. I do know there will be two more building jumps to add to the jump list this year after tonight, or early tomorrow morning...

Still PURELY speculation....I do not know what lead upto Josh's death....all I know is that we miss him and that he's still dead....this we can't change.

LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! Listen to me and my cool adventures. I want to share my stories and pictures with everyone so they can be envious and wish they could be as cool as me! ME ME ME ME ME!

McDork tells us, "KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!!! PUT IT ON THE PICTURE BOARD OR ON THE BASE STORY BOARD."

Better yet! "Sell it to HARD COPY."

    Too many DORKS.

7.) Roger Butler - Died on late jump into a swollen snake river. Landed in knee deep water but canopy swept him into fast a moving river.

    Blue skies, Timmm
