    Side Mount Cameras

Hi all! Has anyone ever experienced any problems with side mount cameras? Such as the risers hitting the D-box on opening or any other problems? I just bought a bonehead optic with D-box & was just wondering.
    Thanks, Base 836

I had a friend lose a side mount to a riser strike. It took the whole d-box off clean, and the camera cratered (there's a very large talus on this particular cliff, so no one ever tried to recover it).

    RE: Side Mount Cameras

A jumper experienced multiple line twists, and was unable to kick out because his side mount was caught up in the twists, object strike, T-wall, Italia . Good luck.

    RE: Side Mount Cameras

you could always put your side mount in the trash and your camera in a bum bag or "fanny pack" (sniggers) and use one of those lipstick cam things...i bought one from these guys...not a bad price and theres no chance of a riser strike...

    hope this helps...

    Ghosty,
you and Space are talking about the SAME event and the SAME belgian jumper, our friend BASE #684. In fact, the information I have about the accident (personal e-mail from BASE #684) is that BASE #684 had a top mounted video camera, which was quite high above his helmet, and that the line twists got caught onto the video camera, making impossible to BASE #684 to clear them...
I know for sure that after BASE #684 recovery and his successive return to skydiving/BASE jumping, he switched to a custom made Belgian helmet that has got a side-mount for video camera, with such a mount being tapered with the rest of the helmet, having no sharp angle nor flat surface to present to riser.

    Stay safe out there

    RE: Side Mount Cameras

Yep, I stand corrected, The side mount incident had a different outcome, multiple linetwists, lost camera and almost object strike. The only good thing was that other videos were recovered that were lost from the same exit point.
    Take care,

I don't have as many jumps as a lot of folks, but I haven't had any problems with mine.

There is new camera helmet that mounts from the inside.
Don't know the manufacturer, might be bonehead. Nice and smooth on the outside, looks great for base jumping. But there is still the worry of losing your wide angle lens.
    Good luck.
