    which helmet camera?

I just order the bone head with Dbox. However I am concerned that the Dbox is a big snag hazard. And I consider going with the Optik and mount the camera top and center.

I know both kinds are being jumped, anyone want to give my an opinion on which might be better in the long run ?

    thanks in advance

    RE: which helmet camera?

I am picking up my Optik later today and I plan on mounting my pc-9 on top in a roll cage. In Alabama last week I got to play with the new IP-5 from Sony... If only I had another thousand to spend on this tiny camera...
    :-)

I like the ontop idea ... I can then shot forward or backward. I dont have my dbox yet but I dont think it can be turned around backward.

I guess I need to get my order changed :)

    RE: which helmet camera?

I made up a plate that fits inbetween the flat-top and the dbox. The plate has tapped holes in it for the dbox to mount to. I can spin my camera around in under 2 minutes. Otherwise, you end up screwing around taking the flat-top off of the helmet, which is a pain in the ass.

What did you think of the IP-5? I've only heard people complain about the video quality.

Can you provide some details as to how you made the "plate" you mention?

How long would it take to rotate the dbox _without_ such a system?

    Thanks in advance,

    RE: which helmet camera?

    Hello,
I have been manfacturing a freefly helmet for a few years. I use Kevlar based on it's strength and lack of weight. I haven't put the helmet on the market because I mostly build them for myself and people I know. (and I hate paying retail)
Recently I developed a Camera helmet that should be "Snag Proof" The Camera is placed on the side, Inside the helmet. (fits Sony pc5,9) The side mount is less pronounced than a D-box due to the lack of Mounting Hardware. It will feature a removable plate for a top mount still camera or a second video camera. Also it has an Audible pocket.
The mold should be finished this Friday and I should have two Models to show off and Test by next weekend.
If anyone has any questions Please feel free to email me. www.khiggins@metricsales.com
I will have Pics by the end of next week.

I'll try describing it as best as I can, but I'll make a sketch at work, and email it to anyone who wants it. I jump a Bonehead Mindwarp with the flat-top option. I have a Dbox for a Sony TRV-8. The connection between the Dbox and the flat-top is basically a nut & bolt. So... to get to the nuts under the flat-top, you have to remove the flat-top from the helmet (pain in the ass).

I made a 1/4" th'k aluminum plate. The plate has c'sinks for (4) #10 FHCS. These bolt through the flat-top with (4) nuts like the Dbox did. Then, I placed (4) #8 tapped holes into the aluminum plate. This is what the Dbox attaches to. In essence, instead of attaching the Dbox with a nut & bolt, it now attaches to a tapped hole. The main difference is that you do not have to get underneith the aluminum plate to remove the Dbox. As long as the bolt pattern is symetric, all you need to do is remove the (4) #8 bolts, spin the Dbox 180, then replace the bolts.

I hope this helps... like I said, I'll make a sketch at work.......

That sounds very similar to this helmet:

    http://www.2kcomposites.com/ffx.html

I jump an FFX such as this myself and I have nothing but good things to say about them - the camera (mine is built for a PC-9) enters from the *inside* of the helmet so the outside shell is totally smooth.

The customer service from this company is excellent also.

    Hope this helps,

    RE: which helmet camera?

Yes all the info helps :) For all those with side mounts, Do you have a problem with your risers hitting it on opening ? I dont have one but it seems to hang out there really far. Do you have to do something to prevent the risers from hitting it ?

    thank you

    Side Mount Riser Strikes

I have a top mount personally, but I did see one of my friends' side mounts take a 400' whipper onto the talus under a big wall.

The riser strike at terminal was actually forceful enough to shear the entire mount off the helmet, as well as giving my friend a severe case of whiplash. Thankfully, he retained consciousness and control of his canopy for the (longish) canopy ride and escape.

His setup was a fairly sketchy homemade job with a Gath helmet, a few screws and a lot of gaffer's tape, though. I bet the purpose built side mounts are much better.

    RE: which helmet camera?

these helmets have changed slightly to give frontal protection instead of the neoprene front.
a mate has just got one and the guys at Y2K modified it for him before delivery so the camera can be mounted to look forwards or backwards.

    RE: which helmet camera?

Are you referring to the FFX ? They modified to do forward or backward ?

I was concerned that I could not shot rear facing video with those molded helmets. I wll email them.

    RE: which helmet camera?

yes it is the ffx that they modified.
all the modification involves is slightly enlarging the hole at the rear that is usually used to turn the camera on and off and check the viewfinder so that it is large enough for the lens..
