    phobia

I live in Toronto Canada. I am scared of heights and rollercosters kill me :P just an expression.

Would I still be able to get in this sport? After I do some heart check ups making sure I am good with heights etc? I want to fly in wingsuits but I learned that I have to have 100s of base jumps first. So how should I get started (After talking to my doctor obviously). Better yet, how did you get started?

    Thanks
    Peace.

you said roller coasters kill me but your still alive, I don't like heights too, so I started flying airplane than did some aerobatic, skydive, and base.after 10 year of skydiving some times I still don't like the climbing to the top( if I was flying no problem but not as passenger any way), if your doctor give you OK on you hart just go for it.

I hate being anywhere tall, where I might be out of control. When I have a rig on, I am in as much control, as I can be. Albeit you are never fully in control, not having one one, is a BLARING "OUT OF CONTROL" sign for me.

So, although I am still anxious on every jump, I feel very empowered after each jump because I faced that phobia/fear.

one psychologists suggest if you are on tall object like bridge or very high building people have tendency to want to jump off of it without parachute or any thing for the mater, I feel that way now If I'm on bridge or building but not as bad on cliff I don't know why, that never happened before BASE jumping

    HI,

A phobia is a type of anxity disorder. It is a strong, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. There are many specific phobias. Acrophobia is a fear of heights.
You may be able to ski the world's tallest mountains but be unable to go above the 5th floor of an office building. Agoraphobia is a fear of public places, and claustrophobia is a fear of closed-in places.

    Thank you....

    Re: phobia

I've seen some BASE folks get all worked up on low class cliff scrambling. Granted, they are super happy when they finally jump but something about the climb completely unnerves them.

    Mind over Matter!

    Re: phobia

i personally get worked up a bit on sketchy climbs without gear, like the climb to echo in moab was a little weird but nothing i couldnt handle. when i was 14 i decided to "try" rock climbing for the first time (bouldering is what it really was), got about 8 feet up, fell backwards, rotated mid-air, and landed with full force straight on my jaw. stood up, spit out about a pint of blood and 8 completely shattered teeth. ever have that dream where your teeth start crumbling and falling out? same thing but real. both jawbones almost shot through my ear canals. 2 yrs of dental reconstructive surgery.

after that i got heavy into toproping and sport climbing the proper way to conquer me fear of rocks.
