    Site Naming Revisited....

The NPS, and some local authorities worldwide monitor these forums as they are public. There is no need to increase the number of agencies coming to this site by naming their jurisdiction as a slap in the face.

The name you give out, may not even be known to that agency until you write it here.
The agency may not even know about these forums, but the agencies that do, can surely make a phone call.

The name of any and all jumps sites, is between you and your logbook. Not this public logbook.

[h2]I would like others to reply to this thread to add to, or contradict what I am saying. I am not trying to censor anything here in these forums. But there are some things that are just not appropriate because of the diverse group of people that visit this site.

    RE: Site Naming Revisited....

I suggest that we refrain from naming any sites, legal or illegal.

My concern is that new BASE jumpers, with little or no training, might find out about a site from this forum, and attempt to jump it. Obviously, they would be jumping in a fairly unsupervised manner, might be using any number of poor techniques, and would have a good chance of being seriously injured or killed. If you think this is no concern of yours, I suggest that you; a) do a quick check on your level of humanity, and b) ask yourself how many fatalities at a legal site it takes before it becomes an illegal site.

It's fairly easy to name sites in ways that we can all understand, but that would keep a beginner (or reporter, or ranger) from ever finding them alone. So, I suggest we all learn to talk about "a coastal bridge in California," or "a legal slider off cliff in Arizona," or "the headquarters of a major financial institution in the bay area."

We all know that inexperienced jumpers show up at sites, often with skydiving rigs, hoping to jump them. Where do you suppose they find out about the sites? Let's help keep them alive (and our sites open), by refraining from naming sites of any kind in this or other public forums.

    "MIGHT"...
There have already been a couple of cases of a person with little or no actual parachuting experience, that heard about a jump site, and tried their luck.

Unfortunately, "LUCK" doesn't go very far in this sport.

    RE: Site Naming Revisited....

    Mick,
a few days after you posted this message, stupid me had posted a location specific site. A vigilant BASE jumper on this site had promptly alerted me to the error of my ways. Right then, I had requested its removal and hopefully no hostile eyes had time to read it. I strongly suggest that in order to avoid what I had done, you should post this subject in bold face print on the home page. Again, my sincere apologies for my careless indiscretion.

    Rob
