    RE: RH strikes again

    >Now, would you rather we all just boycott Bridge
    >Day in protest?

    In a word, yes.

As Americans, we have an obligation to stand up for our rights when they are threatened. Rolling over and pissing ourselves doesn't fit well with our proud tradition of courage and determination, does it? No.

All the other organizers were NOT willing to bend on this one, were they? Your group (WITH ROBIN HEID GHOST-WRITING YOUR PROPOSAL FOR YOU, THOUGH YOU NEVER MENTIONED THIS TO ANYONE AT THE TIME) was willing to spread your legs and thus you were chosen. Nice job!

    >BASE jumping is, unfortunately, viewed as a
    >crazy man's sport by many, including some good
    >folks in WV.

And. . . ? Who cares? Are we in a popularity contest with the NBA now? Are we hoping to get TeeVee sponsorship and guest slots on Oprah?

Some of the good folks of West Virginia used to think rock climbers were nuts when started climbing in the New in the mid-80s. Now it is part of the local culture and central to the tourist economy of the region. And, lo and behold, climbers did it without whoring themselves out for a public spectacle. We just took care of the land, treated locals with respect, organized ourself, AND STOOD UNITED. Compare and contrast with the Heid-sponsored back-stabbing of the BD fiasco.

    >If we didn't show up this year,
    >then maybe they won't even want us next year.

Yes, indeed. That's a risk, and in that case I guess we'd have to jump one of the other hundreds of legal objects in the U.S.A. and around the world instead. Or jump other objects quietly, which I guess is no fun because the TeeVee cameras aren't tracking our every move. Would you sacrifice your privacy to jump the New if there weren't cameras running, Jason?

    >And besides, how many legal bridges are there in
    >the USA? It's the BDC's party, and we're
    >fortunately invited this year. They've changed
    >the rules, but if we want to jump then we're
    >going to have to follow them. We're doing what
    >we can to make this an enjoyable event for
    >everyone. There are even a few surprises this
    >year that will get everyone's blood pumping.

Yeah, welll let's just say that my blood is already pumping just fine without "surprises" and random violations of personal privacy in the mix.

Is it really worth it, man? Is it worth working with Heid and selling the entire community down the river for some sponsorship dollars? Is that what BASE is about?

My mates and I opened a new object the old-fashioned way this week: we went out, we found it, we were very nice and respectful to the locals. They were respectful in return (note this important point), and are happy to have us around doing our thing. Now we jump it with respect, and have a great time. Compare this to the BD 2002 clustercrash.

"You might feel a burn, don't let that bother you. . . it's just pride, man, pride fuckin' with your mind. You ignore that #####, just ignore it."

That feeling sound familiar? The burn of pride thrown away for a cheap trinket?

    RE: RH strikes again

    (1) Heid is not involved with BDay 2002.
    (2) There is NO sponsorship money. Zero, ziltch. However, Bridge Day has always been sponsored in the past....what's the big deal if sponsors can help pay for things and keep registration fees lower?
    (3) It sounds like you have a bigger problem with Heid than with Bridge Day itself. Please work out your personal differences with him via private email.

If you have any further questions, I'll be at the Perrine this weekend. I'll look you up while I'm there :)

    D-dog,

When did you get involved in Bridge Day? Oh, that's right, you never have been involved! Now, shut up and quit running your mouth about things and people you don't know.

    RE: Zilch, zero

Oh c'mon Jason! You say "NO money", and "what's the big deal if sponsors can help pay for things and keep registration fees lower?". So which is it? Either you are a liar, or an idiot. Maybe both. GO FAST is all over the Bridge Day event/mess. And they're not paying any sponsor money? Hmmm..........
You still have not answered HOW MUCH IS REGISTRATION?
Emails are not returned from bridgeday.info web-site.

    Ease down, man.

Jason is a good guy, trying to do the best he can. You may disagree with him, but he certainly does not deserve your obvious contempt.

Read that last post of yours. All caps. Name calling. Overly exagerated rhetoric. Who does that sound like?

    RE: Zilch, zero

How can GoFast sponsor an event that they run themselves? GoFast got the job to be BASE Coordinator.

I'm just trying to give the public some information that is due. I'm a volunteer working with Jim Guyer and GoFast. They don't read the baseboard as much as I do, so I'm offering what I know to get some of your questions answered.

Now I know why nobody else has stepped forward from the Bridge Day staff to answer questions like yours. It's because everybody is so cranky.
To answer your question, registration fees are unknown at this time. We've only been working on Bridge Day since GoFast got the job on April 15th. So we've had a little over a month to arrange all this. Please be patient. I've answered all emails that came to me personally regarding registration. If we knew, we'd tell you. Keep an eye on the website and the cost will be posted.

I agree with you Tom. Jason has done more than some of these "Base Jumpers" who only know how to complain. If you don't like the way things are done then either do something (which they aren't) or shut up about it.

Yes, I do remember getting a call at the last minute about SSN's just before BD 2001. Cough it up or don't jump it's as simple as that. I'm sure registration fees will be released in due time. If your so worried about the price then start saving your pennies now. If your just trying to start trouble then just go away.

    RE: Doug

No, I'm sorry Tom. This whole thing stinks to me and I am willing to stand up and say so. I've gone into gruesome detail, many times, as to why this whole thing stinks (particularly the SSN rollover) - a review of the archives will suffice to set forth my rationale.

Now I've found out that Heid wrote the new BD 2002 proposal, but nobody mentioned that during the process and now precious few of the organizers wants to acknowledge that. But I am assured that Heid "isn't part of BD 2002." Ok, is that true? Are the same people who say that he is off the team willing to admit in public that they had him write their proposals?

Why do I care if Heid is part of this? Simple, to those who have a decent memory. Look at the complete disaster he tried his hardest to make of Petronas 2001. A complete, total train-wreck from the Heid side - the object was nearly lost for good thanks to his explosive instability and lack of professionalism. He wanted money out of the deal, didn't get it, and showed himself to be more than willing to blow up the whole event as a result. He made all BASE jumpers look like immature fools in the process, in my humble opinion - even those of us who did not attend.

Who wants that to happen with Bridge Day? Me, I don't - it is embarrasing to me even if I don't attend to have high-profile BASE events turn into back-stabbing fiascos.

    So:

    1. SSN and loss of personal freedom. Very, very troubling.

    2. Heid ghost-wrote the proposal but nobody mentions that at the time.

    3. Now everyone says Heid isn't involved any more, but many people aren't so sure.

Jason may well be a good guy - I don't know him and have never jumped with him. I disagree with his actions. People can and do disagree, sometimes vehemently. This is not inherently wrong.

I have spent time in Fayetteville routinely since 1986, and I love the area dearly. It is a shame that Bridge Day has turned from a grassroots event into. . . this.

"1. SSN and loss of personal freedom. Very, very troubling."

    Hey Dog,

If your so concerened about your freedoms as an American, I have a suggestion.

Go to your local recruiter and join one of the many fine branches of our armed forces. These men and women are battling everday, the real threats against our freedoms. Or, maybe write a letter of thanks to the families of the Soldiers, Airmen and Marines who have died in that sh!t hole country, Afghanistan so that you can continue to BASE jump. BASE jumping, what a god#amn priveledge in itself .

I'm not trying to attack you, just want to put things in perspective. If you don't want to give out your SSN, fine. But, flaming others for not giving a damn, that's just wrong. Especially when you question our patriotism. I served my country (USMC). It doesn't make me any less of an American because I'm giving them what they want. It's just a stupid number that any creative person can get.

I'm going to Bridge Day because it's there and I want to jump from it. Also, I'm a low-time jumper and want to meet some diverse people who can give me real world info (about the sport). I'd even like to get some info from you, too bad I won't see you there.

Stay out of the bullsh!t politics and have fun enjoying the real freedoms that we, as Americans, can.
