For those of you who can't afford a rangefinder but want some kind of a preliminary measuring tool check this out, my wife bought one for her golf mad mother and while checking whether I thought it was a good present or not I realised it might have some other uses. You couldn't use it everywhere but if:
1) You have someone with you (optional depending on your ingenuity)
2) You have a pole the same lenght as a golf pin, guess that rules out most of you (not that hard to find)
3) You can view vertically from exit point to the base of the object in question or vice versa
then it should give you a reasonably accurate measurement. I have a cliff which I know this will sort out. It measures up to 600 feet.
Of course using a bit of maths this could also be used even where you don't have the aforementioned vertical line of sight.
