Just for your information: eTrex Vista has got (among "Accessories") a very nice scientific calculator, including square and square root!!!!
So, after you have measured "diagonal distance" to object top and distance to object, and while you are bookmarking your object with your GPS, at the same time you calculate its actual height!!!
Without carrying with you another instrument!!!! :+
