Looking at purchasing a cam...

Does anyone have experience w/ the Canon Elura 40mc? Particularly interested in how well the color night shot works. Can't exactly test it out in Best Buy. If it does'nt work that well, would an external infrared source help, or does this work a totally different way? I know it does'nt have a hot shoe, but just theorizing.

Still looking, so any info on other cams is welcomed too. Preferably something small, to fit in a sidewinder(looking for one of those too).

I don't have any experience with that particular camera but from from the cams I have used and friends have used your not going to get any real "color" so to speak from a nightshot. It's mainly greenish color. I would highly suggest getting extra IR lamps. Most of the IR nightshots only reach about 8-12 feet. My buddy Eric had bought one that goes approx. 100 feet right before he died, we jumped with it only once on a 2way but it made a big difference in the viewable footage. One thing you have to do with IR though is to point it directly at your subject, anything to the side and you most likely won't see much.

So does the name "Pyro" mean that you burn a lot of sites???

Hey Jason.

I figured it was probably bogus advertising. You've got a Sony, right? I was also looking @ the PC-101, but everyone's telling me to find a PC-5 online. I did'nt know they were that much better. Pretty scarce, though. The IP5's are nice and lightweight, but no NightShot.
The Extra IR lamp was already figured into my purchase...CraterNate has one and it does make a world of difference.

PS: It figures...I seem to be a magnet for high winds and bad weather. I take it you did'nt "stand" there too long.

And, no...never burnt a sight, but lets just say I'm not permitted to light the bonfire @ the DZ anymore.

I recently purchased a Cannon Elura 40 MC and you get what you pay for. It's definitely small, light weight,user friendly, and relatively inexpensive..... but it's not a SONY. The color night shot is not all it's cracked up to be. I've taken my cannon on a few night tower jumps and the quality is...well... okay. It helps to have a wide angle which will soak up more light... A fresh layer of snow on the ground helps to brighten things up too...

Also, the night feature is an automatic function on the cannon. The camera allegedly adapts to the dark whereas on the Sony, the night feature is a manually activated function.

I don't know about the night shot,but my partner skydived one when they first came out,and it had a nasty flutter in playback.I suggest buying a Sony.I have to say the best night shot I've seen was on a Digital 8(better than PC,or TRV mini DV).Much brighter,and works great for skydiving.Downfall,it's a little bigger,but I have never had a problem base jumping it(50 jumps).
