    Yo! My neck yo!

Hey, I suspect I have a ruptured disk in my neck (this is totally arm-chair and I am seeking professional confirmation of course). It seems to have healed as much as it is going to on its own, but at the extreme limits of neck movement, there is still some pain and weird gravel-sounding noises.

What have other folks experiences been with neck injuries, surgeries, etc. and BASE? Is there no slider down BASE left in life for me? I can skydive my snivelly ST 120, but the thought of putting on a camera, or taking a solid 3 second delay slider down makes me cry ahead of time.

Tell me everything will be alright, yo!

    Yo,
Please get an initial 17 opinions before surgery.. I am 30% better but hope as I heal (as the Docs say)I get better. 12 weeks...
Numbness and or electricity radiating, muscle disbalance (ie one shoulder staying higher than the other), Cramps etc. are signs that your body canīt do more for healing..Pay attention to your posture as this is the intial set up for your spineīs double "S" that sets your neck vertebrae for least irritation to the nerve bundles....(keep pelvis rotated fwd).
    take care,

    Scarface,
along with those 17 pieces of advice why don't you go to someone qualified in alternative medicine.. I had similar problems in '97, lots of pain, restricted movement, a sneeze would even cause me problems. Then I went (on a friends advice) to an Osteopath (Here in Europe an 'Osteopath' specialises in Spine injuries/problems - similar to a chiropractor but with some muscular preperation and less brute force!). I think stateside they may be a type of 'physical therapist' as I think the term 'osteopath' was hijacked during WWII by the medical profession. I've had minimal problems since, and seek out an osteopath wherever I go to get an adjustment whenever I need one.

You change the oil /brakes etc in your car every X thousand miles.. your back deserves at least that.. especially with the punishment we put ourselves through.

Gaz has some valid points, research all options before surgery, My injury was a lateral (left), and was complicated surgery. when I awoke post op, half my tongue was numb and so was the skin on my arm, tongue has since recovered mostly. Its almost 8wks after the surgery, and I feel somewhat better.
    hope this helps.

Disclaimer! this is not my professional medical opinion, but......
If you had a bad disk herniation you'd likely have some radicular symptoms ( i.e. pain radiating down your arm, numbness, pins and needles sensation.) If muscular weakeness was present I would suggest getting to you primary MD as fast as possible for a C-spine MRI. It may not hurt to get an MRI to evaluate nerve root or spinal cord impingment. The natural history of herniated disks without significant nerve impingement is that pain spontanously resolves in 70-90% in 3-6months. A trial of NSAIDS ( ibuprofen etc) might help. If you've seen your primary doctor and gotten no relief from NSAIDS and muscle relaxants, you might consider contacting a pain specialist for evaluation for facet joint injections or cervical epidural steroid injections. email me if you have any questions

    Thanks for the advice yo!

Basically what happened is I took a normal 3 slider down, and I think a normal type opening, and whang! instant pain, brief (like a minute or two) numbness in my left hand. Pain was bad for a couple weeks. Never had any recurrent numbness, nor any weakness. Associated with it was some muscular pain in my upper back, which is about 95% gone now. This took place back in May. As I said b4, neck is pretty good now, except the spinal neck pain at the movement limits noted in the first post.

I think your guys' issues are far more extreme than mine, I hope ya'll get better and back in the air fast. Later.

how about putting the slider on for a 3 second delay, as most manufacturers recommend? or maybe just take a modest 2, and have a little less free fall. If you are doing 3 second delays, you should have time for a snively slider opening. not snively like a stilletto, but better than WHACK! slider down openings.

Another vote to check out so-called "alternative" therapies. I've had lots of injuries - some really required surgery, some required pins and chiro, and some required both to heal best. As to the last, I think combo approaches often have alot to be said for them. Surgery to correct the major structural problems, accupuncture to help re-establish circulation patterns, and physical therapy to rebuild flexibility and useable range of motion.

    Good luck!
