    IP-5

The sony micro-mv cameras (IP series) aren't compatible with any of the other cameras on the market. They use MPEG-2 encoding, so you can't firewire footage to other cameras, and the only computer editing software you can use is Sony's Movieshaker, which is not very good. I bought one last summer, and sold it immediately.

    I'd get a PC-101 instead.

    RE: IP-5

I'm considering breaking down and getting a cam. My reasons are varied, and the use of such will extend beyond BASE, but I'd like to get something that can be jumped as well. I'm not terribly techno-minded when it comes to vid - deferring instead to getting copies of video others have shot. In my limited experience observing some folks' cams used in BASE, only a few of those continued to shoot video during hard opening shock without crapping out for a few secs/millisecs before recovering. ...something about autostabilization? or?? I dunno, but is the PC-101 the kind of cam that will continue videoing even under the most severe of openings? That's what I want. I just need confirmation on this.

    Thanks,
    Gardner

    Garner,

I believe you're talking about the "floating lense" problems that plaqued the PC100. During opening shock, there is a lense component that actually floats inside the camera and it can cause about 1-2 seconds of out-of-focus video during opening shock.

Does that mean that the pc101 is free of that problem?

I know this doesn't answer your question about the PC-101 but I bought the PC-120, which seems to be a later version of the PC-100, and it does not have the floating lens problem... either that or I'm just a high-puller which is probably the case.

I don't know about the PC101....we'll have to wait for a response from someone with experience.

I DO know that it's a major problem for my PC100 and I think the PC100 manual even states that it has a "floating lense".

Another way to tell is to shake the camera when it's off. If you hear the floating lense moving around, then it has a floating lense and should be avoided.

    Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!

    RE: PC120

With the cost of Bullet/Pencil Cams dropping and the quality raising we have a couple in our group and are fiunding them to be a great addition to the camera line up.

With 480 TV Lines of analogue quality, using the same CCD as teh Sony PC9 www.rfconcepts.co.uk is worth a look.

    The upsides -
The overall profile of your setup on a helmet is massively reduced
Versatility is increased with easy options to mount the camera 2m or more from the CamCorder unit, meaning, hand, foot, forward or rearward facing options are simple to set up.

    Downsides-
You still have to carry a Camcorder and battery pack to drive the Bullet - but these easily fit in a small bum-bag.
    Output is analogue

A thought and an option to consider...

    Peace be with you
