    Turkey Boogie in Moab

Hello all, here is the lowdown on the annual boogie in Moab over Thanksgiving. So far it sounds like there might be about 50 jumpers here.

    Turkey Boogie 2002

Who: Any jumper who has at least 30 BASE jumps and wants to jump a bunch of new areas in Moab.
What: Guided approaches to many new sites and revisiting many old favorites. Turkey dinner at the shop on Thursday evening.
Where: Call the shop upon your arrival in Moab and we will let you know what’s happening at that moment.
When: From November 28th through November 30th. Many jumpers are arriving early. If you are arriving early, we will help you hook up with other jumpers at that time. We will start guiding on Thursday morning. Meet at the McDonald’s parking lot at 7a.m.
Why: Because most people don’t have the time to find new exit points when they come here on vacation. We currently have about 60 exit points and about 1,198 to go. Although it was windy last year, this is typically the best time of the year to jump. It is usually calm all day and the temperature is perfect (in the 60’s). It’s not a bad idea to come prepared with a Winter jacket and a rain jacket as well.
How much? This year we are charging a $20 boogie fee. This will get you all the free guiding you can handle including GPS downloads for approaches, free transportation on Saturday for Mineral Bottom, a Vertigo T-shirt, and a Turkey dinner on Thursday night (everyone brings a side dish). A bargain at twice the price.

    Tentative schedule of events:

    Thursday November 28th:
Meet at McDonald’s at 7:00a.m. for a convoy out to the Echo area, we have added several new exit points in this area so even if you jumped here last year, you will have plenty of new options, AT LEAST TWO of which have never been jumped.
Dinner will start at 6pm at the Vertigo shop. At this time you will have the option of choosing which adventures you will go on the following day.
    Friday November 29th:
All participants will meet your group leader wherever and whenever they told you to the night before. Some destinations include Day Canyon, Black Dragon Wash, Moonflower Canyon, Potash Road, Mill Creek, etc… Each guide will be moving on to additional locations throughout the day.
    Saturday November 30th:
We will spend the day out at Mineral Bottom, a Unimog(military transport) will be shuttling jumpers up from the bottom all day. Jumpers will want to bring food, water, whatever you need for the day as it is a 30 minute drive back to the last gas station once you are there.
    Additional information:
There are many hotels, a hostel, and spaces in some rental houses available. Camping is always an option here, but be prepared for some very cold nights. We will have fixed ropes set up at some of the more technical sites. You will need jumars, slings and a harness(and everything else you need to jug) to access these sites. Some are only twenty foot sections that can be toproped(harness only) but one is a 100 foot vertical wall which requires a knowledge of ascent with jumars. We do not have any tower climbs/jumps planned at this time, but if anyone is interested in this type of specialty jump, please contact us prior to the boogie so that we can arrange climbing partners.

    RE: Turkey Boogie in Moab

Just about everyone knows Jimmy and Marta, but if you have not had the opportunity to visit them in Moab, you're really missing out. Their knowledge of sites in this huge region is unsurpassed. And their spirit, vibes, heart, and soul is unmatched by few. The Turkey gathering is not to be missed!

Unless your me, of course. I have to train in that other sport, at a popular place in Southern Cal, but at least I can celebrate Turkey Day with 173ft of style! ;-)

Best wishes to the Moab Turkey Crew...

Sweet hotel deal from Motel 6

Motel 6 (brand new) at the North end of town is offering a smokin' deal to jumpers:
Up to 2 people in a room for 29.99, that's right folks, 29.99.
Now if that weren't enough, they are throwing in a hot breakfast(redeemable at the Pancake House) for 2.99
    The number is (435) 259-6686

RE: Sweet hotel deal from Motel 6

    Hi Jimmy,

First off thanks for all the hard work - I am SUper excited to get to the Turkey Boogie this year! Just wondering if there was someone in particular to talk to at Motel 6. I made the reservation but she(Stephanie) gave me the regular rate of 32.99 + tx for two. She said that she had not heard of any deal at 29.99. Either way, 32.99 is only a beer away from 29.99 and that's still a pretty awesome deal! Anyway, just wondering if I needed to say "The password is ..."

Motel 6 actually called me,wanted to do the deal, and gave me that price so it will be 29.99 for up to 2 people, guaranteed. I will call her again tomorrow to make sure she let's all of her people know, tell them you're BASE jumpers coming in town for the Turkey Boogie.

Fat old Dogs on the way

I'm planning to be in Moab Thurs-Sunday, Jimmy, and I'd love to hook up with some folks to bag a few towers. I'll bring my pathetically old trad rack, but I don't have much in the way of reliable camming hardware that I'd trust on a fall on soft sandstone. My "rack" is notorious in these parts for being mostly Tri-Cams, some wanked-out RPs, and a wide selection of over-used, antique nuts. Oh, plus heaps of pooter slings and bail 'biners collected over the years, and an original #2 Camalot, circa 1990.

Anway, I can lead .10s on that crap but anything more substantive and I'd be better off hooking up with someone who has a real rack. Given my endurance level, I think I'll avoid taking a shot at, say, the old Tricks Are For Kids line (though I hear it is not open due to access issues anyway).

    See you soon!

    >Man I really wish I was going to be out there in
    >Mobe to meet you (and others), but maybe next
    >year. I'd have liked to go on one of your tower
    >climbs. I probably shouldn't be on a climb like
    >that without some major conditioning and tons of
    >instruction, but I do know you and others who
    >will be there are more than accomplished and
    >could haul my butt up there if I bribed you
    >enough ;-) .

Ha! I have lots of work to do in the next few weeks to build back some endurance for trad leading. In the last five months, I've tied into a rope a total of twice; bouldering is fun, but it doesn't build much endurance &-)

    Good luck with the painting!

    RE: Know your prey

    Hey D
We went up Castleton with a pretty standard rack, contrary to popular belief, not all routes out here require 10 of the same size cam. It is a sweet 5.9 with a beautiful 400 ft. arete exit which allows you to skip the set of rappels and 1,000 foot approach talus which the climbers without rigs have to endure. Although they get to skip the 14 extra pounds of gear per person on the way up, so... Wayne Crill, Lee Hardesty or Damian Doucette are the folks to ask as they have done the most leading of jumpable stuff out here. Wayne is definitely coming out and you might have to twist his arm for about 1/2 a second to get him up a tower with a rig on his back.
    See ya!

    I am a jive turkey

Now I know that it isn’t cool to be a jive turkey this close to Thanksgiving, but here’s the deal. Marta and I were all scheduled to leave for Brazil to get married (again, this time with her family in the Catholic church) just after the boogie in the beginning of December. I have been informed by Delta that they have cancelled all flights into Rio for the month of December, possibly permanently. This means that everyone who was going to Rio in December is being shuffled around, we are cashing in frequent flier miles to afford this trip so we have the least flexibility. We have been shuffled to November 29th. This is the Friday after Thanksgiving which also happens to be in the middle of the Turkey boogie.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?
Not much as far as the boogie is concerned, luckily. We will be guiding all day Thursday, hosting the traditional dinner on Thursday night, and leaving at about 4 a.m. for the airport. Our guides are in place to take you around the area on Friday as planned. If you are not arriving until Friday, email Vertigo and I will arrange when and where to meet your guide for Friday. The Unimog(military transport) will be prepaid and ready to take you up from the bottom of Mineral Bottom all day Saturday. Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans. I have tried for 4 days to make the airlines see the importance of this boogie and they just do not have the vision.

    RE: Know your prey

    Dog

I may be there and will definately have more than enough rack. I'll bring haul bag, jugs, aiders, etc.

Talking with Lee Hardesty last year he mentioned that there are routes that require less than 5.10 skill. Anyway, I think the ethic is different if we're ascending to jump so it wouldn't matter if we were to pull down on a few silver holds. (Ooooh, I even hate to say that being an old tradmeister)

Hope to see you guys. I will probably fly my plane and bumm around from there.

    Thanks D,
I also spoke with Hank Caylor and he is already planning on doing Castleton with Wayne on Sunday, that rope is full, but I will keep my ear to the ground, Ten Bears.

    RE: Know your prey

You guys would love Ancient Art in the Fisher Towers. It is an ultimately famous climb because it ends on a dinner plate sized summit called the corkscrew summit. Mario and Wayne climb/jumped it last year. It is a 5.11 in the book, but a bolt is placed at that section making it a 5.9. It is a very clean route(for the Fisher Towers). The jump is 300+ feet clean into a horseshoe bowl which would be a problem with a right or left but if your straightened out by then you gain approximately an extra 150 vertical feet. A technical jump but one you'll never forget. Also, you can drop your rope straight down to the trail avoiding the necessity of jumping with it. The landing area is somewhat tight, but totally within reason. Unless your Australian, then it's way too big.

    Directions to the Vertigo Shop

Our shop is 2 miles South of Moab on the right hand side of Hwy. 191. There is a 10 foot tall indian in front pointing at the shop. The building is a converted old trading post with wooden posts and rock walls. If you see a Shell gas station on the left side, you've gone about a 1/4 mile too far.
    The phone number is 435-259-1085
    See you soon!
