Woman, believed to be American, killed in base jump in Norway
    Tue Jul 23,12:09 PM ET

OSLO, Norway - A woman identified as an American by her co-jumpers was killed in a base jump in western Norway on Tuesday, police said.

Operations leader Arvid Jensen of the Stavanger police said he had no other details, because the effort to recover her body from the mountainside was continuing.

"We have no information about her age and have not confirmed her identity," he said by telephone from Stavanger, a port city about 300 kilometers (185 miles) west of Oslo, the capital.

"She was identified as American by those with her, and we have no reason to doubt that," Jensen added.

The woman crashed into the mountainside after jumping with a parachute from Kjerag, a 1,000-meter (3,300-foot cliff) overlooking a fjord near Stavanger.

Jensen said climbers who managed to reach her in heavy fog confirmed that she was dead. He said he did not know when he would have more information, and that her identity would be
withheld until the next of kin was notified.

According to the TV-2 commercial television station, she was the seventh person to die of 800 people who have made the jump since 1995.

    Has the family been notified?

I know there are several people, who had female friends there, holding their breath, waiting to hear the name.

    RE: Kjerag fatality

Hearsay (that's all I have) is minimal (but qualified) skydiving experience, very few BASE jumps, BASE specific gear, qualified (professional) instruction.

It sounded like an unstable exit that wasn't recovered in time for deployment.

Again, that's all hearsay. I'm sure that a factual report will have to wait for the return of the expedition on July 30th, or later.

My heart goes out to her husband. Watching that happen has to be one of the worst experiences imaginable.
