    RE: american way

this kinds of reminds of the time i was talking to base 115,
base 175, and base 355 about base 247. gosh, i mean who would
have thought base 247 and base 533 would have gotten into
    an argument about base 497.

the number is just a number. it does represent however something
much older though that is fading away in base like it did
in skydiving years ago. you can be the best base jumper in
the world and not have a number, but the number represents the
    pirate element.

(hey, i qualified for base at 100 base jumps by doing a bridge)

    -base 460

    Hey Chickenshit,

I doubt you are a jumper with an attitude like that. Go jump your sister.

Who would believe that nerd speaks for the rest of us anyway?

    RE: american way

Here's a little historical perspective for you, Euroboy:

When World War II ended and all of Europe was in ruins, the American Way was to spend billions and billions of dollars to rebuild it... to rebuild _your_ parents' homes and towns and businesses after _your_ compadres in Europe saw fit to destroy themselves with yet another in a long line of debilitating wars.

When the U.S. was the world's premier economic power -- the only country with the atomic bomb, the only industrial nation left intact -- it chose to nurture and rebuild western Europe instead of turning it into a bunch of impoverished tribute states, as your friendly Slavic neighbor to the east did.

The American Way? Check out the difference between western and eastern Europe today.

And by the way, here's an American Way Quiz for you:

    1) Where is most BASE gear made?
    2) What nationality was Carl Boenish?
    3) Where is El Capitan mountain?
    4) Where is the Royal Gorge Bridge?
    5) What nationality is Mick Knutson?
    6) Where is the BASE Board server?

The subjects of all these questions were/are critical to the creation, development and expansion of BASE jumping worldwide.

And the answers are all the same...

    S
    A

    Love,

    RE: american way

    Hello european jumper...

I wouldn't be too concerned when you run across a jumper with that attitude. One day, a jumping mate of mine ran into a jumper that had different views and my friend's response was "Hey, go your own way." He didn't mean it in the literal sense, rather he meant it in the way of "Hey, you have your views and I have mine. But that really doesn't matter - let's go jump!"

I'm an American jumper with 175 jumps and no BASE number. Do I want a BASE number? Heck yea! But it's not the driving force behind my passion to BASE.

I passed on the opportunity to jump a "B" because I knew I wasn't ready at the time. Sure, it means waiting to get a BASE number. But it also felt good walking away knowing that it would happen when the time was right.

At any rate, I think it's alot more fun to spend time actually jumping, rather than talking trash on the board.

But hey, go your own way!

    RE: american way

Bryan, I really liked your response to the Euroboy. I have been the "on paper" Executive Director of the US BASE Association for the last 8 or so years and it's my wife Joy and I that now keep track of the official BASE numbers. When I say "official" I guess the guy from Europe can keep his head in the sand, but the fact is that modern BASE jumping started with Carl and Jean Boenish with Phil Smith, Phil Mayfield, Andy Smith, and several others. All from the USA. I have no clue as to why the young and presumably inexperienced jumper (as far as time in the sport) seems to have such a hostile attitude towards the US Base Association official BASE numbers. When Carl started these numbers and the first group decided upon the acronym BASE, they were not excluding Europeans. Carl had a vision that BASE was the best way yet to celebrate the Human Spirit and I guarantee you that neither Carl Boenish, Jean, or any of the folks that got the USBA off the ground had any intention of discriminating against other countries just because our title is the US BASE Association. Fact is, we invented the word and the first jumps. The numbers were just like any other numbers, D license, SCR, etc. to try to record the order of people who went to the trouble of getting all 4 objects.
To the Euroboy who wants us to keep our numbers over here, I will say that my wife who keeps the numbers tells me that nearly half of the numbers we've issued in the past 10 months have been to Europeans. I just spent part of last summer jumping with a great European, Thor Alex, the day he died, and I can assure you, that my twin brother and I felt none of the animosity displayed by the anonymous "European" jumper. I know and have jumped with some of the European pioneers like Nigel Slee (British Base #1) and John Mjoen, Norwegian BASE # 1 and, Thor Alex, Norwegian #2, and Nick Feteris (almost Europe--just kidding Nick), Ausi #1. Mr. European, I think you are in the minority. There are many great jumpers, esp in Norway that do not have easy access to buildings. That does not make them lesser Base Jumpers. It simply means they don't have a building. For those who have been on top of buildings, you will need no further explaination. Anyway, sorry the the "young European guy is percieved as representing Europe, because he does not.

    Hi Rick

I suspect the young European is frustrated at all the sites that have been shut down in Europe - many due to people from foreign countries (Europe, Americas, Eurasia, Oceania) not treating the sites with respect (some travelers seem to change personality when they leave home).

As Nick de G pointed out before, the BASE numbers are a very useful historical record of our sport. Keep up the good work. For those that don't have the numbers (like myself), keep up the jumping.

Good to hear from you Tom. Thanks for the support and you can bet that we'll keep it up. Surpisingly, the official numbers do seem to mean a lot to many jumpers out there. We get nearly half from people outside the US lately. Take care blue skies and soft walls.

I don't know what you've used or been using before typing this nonsense. In the future try to speek for yourself, i'm not mad at you i just don't understand you.
I wonder what gear you're using?
I wonder how you've got in to this sport, and do you know where the sport has been develloped?? etc etc etc..
I'm just dissapointed, i toucht all of us had the same ideas about live and how to have lots of fun whit friends.
It's a small world so instead of judging, try to help one and other. It could be so mutch fun to exchange spots etc.
Lose that attitude and start to have even more fun!!
Anyway; have fun and taka care.
