How do I know when it's time to retire my PC?

I just did my 100th jump (thank you very much) :-). And my opening took forever! Was an 11 sec delay A jump. Maybe it's just in my head, maybe not. My last two jumps were slider down's so it's possible that I was just thinking it was a bit too slow.

Here's my question: How do you know when it's time to replace the PC? Mine is a vented apex ZP with about 80 jumps on it.

    Thanks in Advance,

    C

My honest opinion is be VERY concervative when agin a PC. I saw a PC BLOW UP in Norway on a 8-9 second delay. Nobody there could understand why the guy was still alive after seeing the PC, but he was OK. THe PC was beyond repair and I would not even try myself.

I have had a few PC's for about 2 years now, but I only put around 50 jumps each on them so far. I would see what they where exposed to. I have retired a couple of PC's after 1 season for just dirt, and/or water exposure.

It is only about $75.00 each, but it is the biiggest single point of failure in the system.

    Mick speaks true.

I have similarly sized and configured PC's that are just fine, and one hesitation isn't really a very large sample size--I've seen lots of hesitations on brand new PC's.

Still, if it makes you uncomfortable at all, replace it. If your PC fails, you will die--no second chance, no doubts. $75 is a small price to pay for peace of mind, and an even smaller price to pay for your life.

When you have to ask--you should probably retire it.

Mick. How did it blow up? Just curious...

This is pretty dramatic thing and this is good data on understanding a gear failure that could kill.

Was the PC attached to the center-line or just the tape at the bottom?
Did it the ZP tear from the mesh? Did the ZP blow apart? Did the mesh tear heavily? Did the centerline break?

    Pardon... let me correct something...

Was the bridle attached PC centerline or nearby tape?

You know it's time to replace your pilot chute when it fails to pull your shrivel flap. Unfortunately, if that is the case, you are just about to leave a piece of your mind on the rocks or whatever just below the exit point. If you think maybe your pilot chute has had enough, buy a new one now. The cost of life is death, what a bargain, eh?

It says on the men's room wall in McStiff's that you sucked a golf ball from Winnipeg to Calgary through a leaky garden hose. You must buy a new PC for every jump.

I'll make it up North this year if I have to walk it. Get your women ready.

    Cya bro',

my roommate has had one for 10 yrs. 42' PC She put 300ish jumps on it all kinds of it. It is still ok but she just asked the question, should I get a new one. Then like several others have said it's time when you ask. At the shop in Moab today I asked "top dogs" what they thought and should be good for apprx 500 jumps. And that's taking care of it!!
Depends on several different things of course.

I heard that Spence sold not only all his PCs, but also all of his bridles to boot! :P

The PDX crew eagerly aways Captain Tard's arrival on the scene.

You're moving in 10 days but won't be in Oregon until summer? You walking there, dragging your $hit behind you?

You can only take so many short cuts in BASE. What're you gonna do next? Skip the exit and just go home after ...1...Cya? There'll come a time when you won't leave the house.

    Have fun, stay crazy.
