Has anyone used a GPS attachment for a palm-pilot to check the altitude of an object? If so, are they reasonably accurate?. I've seen a GPS used to calculate altitude b4, but it was a more expensive model, I think.

Yo Gaz,
I have a Garmin e-map and I find the location is near perfect but altitude reporting is shite.

I don't know anything about the palm pilot version but my garmin 3 is piss poor when it comes to altitude.:-(
yuri usually knows about this stuff
Yo!
Very roughly, GPS altitude is about 50% less accurate than horizontal position and can be much worse than that. GPS only needs a clear view of 3 satellites for a horizontal fix. 3D fix (altitude) requires 4 satellites.
Horizontal accuracy starts at ~25ft (good signal). The best vertical you can get is probably about 50ft.
Garmin eTrex Summit (and the new Vista) has an accurate barometric altimeter and only use GPS altitude average for a long-term pressure change calibration.
bsbd!
Yuri.
