From parachute to wedding dress (Lake County News-Sun)
A World War II pilot's parachute was used to make his wife's wedding dress in 1947. During the 1940s, nylon was scarce. So while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, glider pilot John Smelcer sent his fiancé Carol Rosalie Kirkpatrick of Waukegan his nylon parachute to make a wedding dress for their September 1947 wedding in Waukegan.
