View Full Version : Cliff strike - Norway

At the end of July I had a cliff strike at Smellevagen in Norway. This is to thank the BASE Brothers who helped me out.I have not been able to get hold of all of your names,I apologise.
From Norway - Stein,Kim and Klaus.
From Sweden - Mikael and Per.
From the USA - Tibor.
From Australia - Gary and Darcy.
Mikael and Tibor jumped straight after me and landed on the talus to come and look for me.The other guys came with the rescue gear all of these guys carried me down for the chopper rescue.
What I have learned:
At the time of my strike I had 138 BASE jumps and 4 wingsuit flights,130 skydives and 2 wingsuit flights out of a airplane and 4 fullon 180's out of all my BASE jumps. My last 2 , before the strike ,were in Norway, one with a line-twist.On both of them I went for my risers and not my toggels.Although I cant remember, I'm pretty sure I worked my risers on the strike.Maybe something to learn here.
Pilotchute - On the 2 earlier 180's I jumped a pilotchute with major construction faults.Maybe someone can give some feedback concerning what to look for and how to attach a pilotchute correctly.I had no idea until Space showed me the problem. However my pilotchute on the strike was perfect as I had just got a new one.
Pack job - I packed slider-up with 3 turns on each of the 6 nose cells and the centre cell fully exposed with a +-6 second delay. This may have been the reason for the strike.
Head injury - I have a couple of cracks in my skull leading from my right eye to the base of my skull and some bone fragments did permanent damage to the optic nerve - THINK ABOUT WEARING A GOOD HELMET !!!
Mick , thanks for the board and the opportunity to put this out - good to meet you in Norway, see you next season.

you try to find the reasons of the cliff strike, of the line twist,.... in your rig, may be check your body position next time
130 skydives, very low experience to flight the suit...

Could you clarify what you meant by the pilot chute attachment being an area for concern???? Is this not one of the most basic & fundamental parts of the system (the attachment of the bridle at either end).

Any info appreciated.

Yes, we meet in Norway in 2001 and then we will jump like crazy. You just hurry up and heal fast :) 2001 is the year for me to start flying the suit.

It looks dangerus but it looks to fun for me to not try.

We keep in contact!

Ps
Going on a night boogie to night :)

Hey Loper ,
I jumped with 4 other guys . I asked about the jump . My exit postion was good . I love the suit it is the new dimension in BASE ,I wish I could do more jumps from an airplane with it but in S.A. the skydive rule is 500 jumps , so no other option but to take it to BASE .

Hey MT,
What I've learnt from Space is that the pilotchute at the attachment point should be perfectly symetrical in other words the first check is to see that all the attachment lines are equidistant from the pilotchute attachment point. .Space if you read this please respond with all the other information you gave me about the pilotchute and its attachment to the bridle .

Ever wonder why associations and wingsuit manufacturer set a 500 jump minimum on things ?

Sometime people have to be protected from there own stupidity. Unfortunately this person appears to be still pretty stupid - I would have though a cliff strike maybe would have knocked some sense into them.

Maybe he'll win a Darwin award sooner or later.

Sooner me thinks....

Hi "." (?!?)

Almost every whuffo (and most skydivers) I know think I'm stupid for BASE jumping at all so it's all relative. I don't know this guy and I'm not saying somebody with his experience should or shouldn't be jumping a wingsuit but some people have talents which the recomended minimum doesn't take into account. Besides which as far as I was aware the particular incident here was a jump without a wingsuit (I may be wrong).

Just my opinion,

Craig

Hi Shaun,
Very nice to meet you in Norway, I'd have given you crap if I'd known you weren't wearing a helm, but I can't see this from the boat, and I would have seen ya in the horsespital but I was very busy with the other jumpers, but I was kept updated by Chris of your condition.
So to speak about your jump and PC.,
6 secs sucks for this size PC,(36" smallmesh), I don't know if you had a mesh or sail slider, sail definately sucks for this delay, I don't think you were jumping the wingsuit, because I was at #5,6,7 with the boat when I heard on radio of the cliff strike, anyway; the original problem you had with your 32" was that the reinforcement tapes were on the block of the mesh as opposed to the bias and this allowed the skirt to stretch and provide less drag between the reinforcement tapes, I would imagine, 30% less drag, This not so positive drag induced your 180° in the first jumps you made there. When you jumped Smellvegan, you put my PC in the same low drag scenario as your 32" (with the drag of a ca 22" at terminal).
To you PC hooker uppers, check the reinforcement tapes N vs S, E vs W, and then East vs North etc, This should be a basic knowledge. The thing that is sucking is that some people are building BASE PCs with the tapes on the block vs bias, resulting in a 30% + less drag for the given size PC! There is no popular BASE gear Manu who does this at the moment. So hey, let's be careful out there.
check out the tapes on the mesh, they should be running NE SW SE & NW, the fabric should IMHO be oriented the same as the mesh, holding it up to a light will show this as one can see the orientation of the ripstop and mesh, any deviation from this will result in a turning PC, which can possibly be an orbiter that turns the canopy before line stretch.
there are 2 differing types of off headings, Deployment (with a twist in the Risers which are PC related and flying off headings which are due to the canopy fighting to push the slider down because of insufficient extraction forces and/or bad packing.

Please correspond to me Shaun personally or on the board, as I miss you and wishto stay in contact.
take care Bro,
