View Full Version : would uneven canopy porosity hurt heading performance?

was wondering if one side of a canopy got wet and the other side stayed dry if that would hurt heading performance. or if there were certain colors of fabric that the porosity was different from one color to another.

Hi!

It's true that different colors have different porosity. White is the best with black the worst.
The differences between "white" and "black" however, start to increase with canopy age. New white and new black will be the same (except color;-)). So I would not care about it on a new canopy.

Something to keep in mind is that if you have an unsymmetric color pattern on your canopy, it is much more likely to develop a built in turn which is due to shrinking and color.
(but again not matter within some 100 jumps on that canopy).

Chris,
It is likely that getting a canopy wet on one side and not the other will effect cloth porosity and possibly create some shrinkage of tapes/thread. However, it is unlikely that it will cause any problems with heading performance.

Almost all off-heading deployments actually occur between pack opening and line stretch. Additionally, it would require a huge (on the order of half Mojo 240 sewn to half Mojo 260) asymetery in dimension and porosity to significantly influence heading performance.

Having said that, getting a canopy wet, or worse, half-wet is a very good way to create a built-in turn.

The four worst things you can do to a canopy:

Mechanical damage
Getting it wet (esp. salt water)
UV damage
Not using it :-)

Used my Mojo the other night.
Great canopy.
Thanks Adam!

Yikes! How long do I have before my Mojo becomes worthless from disuse?

thanks to all that responded, learned some new stuff today. but shouldnt not using a canopy be at the top of the list. thats worse than pulling apart a packed canopy.

take care
