I am very interested in starting base jumping. i want to have the right gear though. i have read all the articles there are to read and am thinking of taking one of the first jump courses offered though one of the main base manufacturors. However, i want to have my own gear, and i dont know what would be best for me. I am looking for something that is good for beginners (since i have never base jumped) and that will be sutable for all kinds of jumps in the future, high and low altitude. I am a 180lb male. Suggestions would be great. Price is not a problem, i am just looking for the best setup for me. Thanks.

I wasn't going to post to this, since I'm sure you've already seen my recommendations:

However, I noted your location. I'm in Atascadero for a bit, visiting family. Feel free to drop me an email if you need more help.

The Ace is manufactured by Consolidated Rigging.

This is funny...
>Recommendation: Ace, all F-111, Consolidated Rigging
My favorite all around BASE canopy is the Ace, from Consolidated Rigging. The Ace airfoil (which is identical to the Blackjack) has tremendous control range, giving both very high and very low speeds. It flares quite well, although you may have to adjust toggle settings for your personal arm length and preference. It also opens (the real issue in BASE canopies) faster, cleaner, and more consistently than any other unvented canopy on the market. In my opinion, the best canopy for a beginning BASE jumper is a standard, all F-111 Ace.
Hey Tom, this is funny because you don't even jump an ACE. You have a BlackJack, and as I recall (along with several others) you were complaining about the sniveling openings - one in particular when you sniveled into a talus following a low pull.
Just tryin to refresh your memory...

Keep it simple.
You can't go wrong with a Fox or Mojo 285/280. These are tried and proven canopies.
You can't go wrong with a velcro rig that has a tuck tab on top of the shrivel flap either.
You should have no trouble finding a used rig like this.
Once you have a few jumps you may decide you really like the low stuff or really like the high stuff and may want to tailor your gear to your favorite kind of jumps.

I don't recall ever complaining about the opening. I do not think the Blackjack has snivelly openings. In my opinion, it opens cleaner and faster than any other canopy I have jumped (so, everything except the Flik, which I have never jumped).
The talus impact was unquestionably my own fault, not that of the gear (regardless of what gear I was using). In fact, I'd guess that hitting the talus was the right thing to do (I had both hands on the risers, pulling down, when I impacted--not that I expect that made much difference). At any rate, it sure beat hitting the wall, then falling onto the talus.

You should really be jumping a Dagger canopy packed into a Warlock container from Vertigo BASE Outfitters, don't listen to those other freaks.

IMO you should make yourself aware of all the companies that manufacture base stuff. or at least several of them.
yo! do not just run out and buy the first canopy that a couple baseboard locals mention. there is a lot to think about, different canopies are suitable to different jumps. as for the ace, yes, it's responsive, but just how high performance do you want a BASE canopy? is there such a thing as too high performance??? also, think about how long a canopy's been on the market...i must say that i've heard of, and witnessed lots of inconcisticies with the heading of the ace opening. both LINE-TWISTS and 180s. i personally will not jump the ace with a slider, that is unless i can track so far i'm miles away from the object and an off-heading is a non-issue. it just doestn't have the same long term record as the mojo, and some other canopies.

You have to contact Morpheus at http://www.baserigs.com/home.html
They sell Troll V-tech canopy. I think is the best on opening and on landing. I going to buy it to. I now have Troll 245.
B.A.S.E. is not a crime, it's way of life.

Thanks for the recommendation Ljobo, but we want to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding between the vent/valve design on the Troll and utilizing the name v-tec.
The unique design of the valve system on the Troll is called Mono Directional Valve technology or MDV.
We just wanted to clear that up.
Sincerely,
