Keith,
of course on the site suggested by Space you can find plenty of information concerning the equipment itself.
Early in november 1999 I bought myself a Bushnell Laser Rangefinder 800 compact.
After having carried out a market research on the web, I bought it finally form Bear Basin Outfitters (whose web site is: http://www.bearbasin.com/rangefinder.htm) for 300$, probably now it costs something more. Other web shops were much more expensive.
I tested the toy, it is really an outstanding piece of equipment, but of course you cannot measure an object at 800 yards that is not perpendicular to the shooting, but I measured personally objects (=buildings) that were more than 600 m far apart.
The Bushnell Laser Rangefinder 1000 of course is more powerful (max 1000 yards of scope), but it is definitely much bigger and heavier than the 800 compact, so for me the compact 800 was the best compromise with respect to size for handhelding it, performance (max 800 yards theoretical) and price.
Cheers and blue skies

Hey Keith:
Are you going to use that laser on a site we both know?
If you do, can you send me an email and let me know the actual altitude?
Thanks,
