BASE has no practical purpose!
You guys should sit back and ask yourselves are we having fun (and no squabbling among each other isn't the fun bit).
Pursuit of the freedom / excellence you desire is entirely reasonable but it should be fun trying to get there. Getting caught up in the end goal will only result in you not living for the moment and I think it's obvious that in this sport the moment could very easily pass you by.
Not that I advocate pursuit of power within a recreational sport but take this on board. One of the real signs of power or status is the ability to stand back and let others take the credit, safe in the knowledge that due to your dedication and hard work that you will be remembered as the real man / woman behind the success in question.
I wonder if this event had gone horribly wrong would everyone be so quick to take responsibility ;-)
