A lot of them show up on Friday, and it looks
like this year, they will be getting shafted. :-(

actually, i agree that you raise a valid point.
this issue, and the personal privacy concerns, are the first rational criticisms i've seen of the bd organization imo.
more and more often i find that the only way to register for bike races, runs, triathlons and now bridge jumps is via the internet.
this does hose non-pc-connected potential participants if they are not able to make special arrangements prior to an imposed deadline.
i see no reason to preclude people from using snail mail or it's analogs to register for an event.
it is not "fair" to exclude someone just bcause they are not computer savvy.
but
i don't have much sympathy for the "back woods old-timers" that show up on friday night.
even they can mail in an application in advance.
