View Full Version : Where to go without this dam snow?

Dilemma: If you had not used any vacation yet this year... your boss tells you to use it or loose it... it just snowed for 2 straight days where you live...and you now have two weeks to do whatever you like best...! What would you do? O.K. after that (Considering that will only take 15 minutes out of each day).
Question: Any suggestions for a BASE vacation with unlimited flickablity, preferably above 50 degrees, and somewhere in continental US? I could stay here and climb A's in the snow but thats not only stupid, A's without vators suck in the cold.
Thanks,

Hi Donk -
Depending on your experience level and aspirations, you might want to consider Moab. On good days, the high temps are 45-60 degrees...but during cold fronts, it can be much colder than that. Personally, I like 50 degrees when I'm hiking and flickin' cliffs.
A great option might be to start in a place like that and then travel around via rental car to other places in the west and southwest. Knowing people in these areas will take you a long way in accessing sites. But if you know how to take care of yourself while jumping, are generally friendly, and easy to get along with...it's not hard to meet people and make friends along the way.

Coordinating your trip in conjunction with the moon can be a real plus...but it looks like you don't have this option.

Do you like to skydive as well as BASE? One option would be Moab followed by a migration South to Arizona where there are decent holiday boogies going on. While your there...there's a decent chance you might be able to hook up with other BASE jumpers and then visit the local fare.

Forgive me if you already know this, but one thing to keep in mind...
I consider Moab to be an advanced place. The cliffs there are low and sharp. In my humble opinion, one should have their skills and gear dialed in before jumping there. Because when things go wrong (and they eventually will) your stuff better be together if you want a decent chance of walking away.
I'm sure you know all this already - it's just my disclaimer for the area.
If you think you might head to Moab next week, drop me an email at: sky_guy_ca@yahoo.com (that's underscores, not spaces)
Have fun whichever way you do go!

Thanks Bryan. I have been thinking about MOAB for quite some time. There is a group of us here with many A's, a nice compliment of S's, and we'll soon have the ever illusive B but no E's. :-( As challenging as MOAB sounds, I would definitely appreciate the guidance of a resident expert. The skills and preparation awareness are definitely there, in fact we have been flicking the A’s from 400’ to help prepare for both MAOB and our up coming B but as with any cherry flick, it's always it's nice to be with someone who has been there before. You can never know enough… especially when it comes to BASE.
Thanks again for the info and if I can motivate someone to join me next week (MOAB is along drive from Kansas), I'll let you know but it looks like I might end up back home in Boston with the SO. There is a sweet B there if I can find the man with the “key”. I am definitely planning a trip to MOAB early this spring in conjunction w/ a few days at Telluride... we’ll have to drive by that very tantalizing RGB on the way, so we may be delayed. :-) I’ll keep you posted.
